I have been learning French for several years now. The lessons are always interesting and fun. There is an emphasis on listening to spoken French from a number of sources, which, coupled with the vocabulary and clarification of pronunciation, improves our spoken French. This builds confidence and I always look forward to the weekly lessons.

Michael is a skillful linguist and teaches with precision, ensuring that we absorb grammatical details and tricky constructions while also noting idiomatic expressions and connection between languages. As we are a small group, Michael provides differentiated and personalized learning opportunities so that everyone is challenged and progresses at their own pace. There is always time to discuss French films and culture, too. We are lucky to have our class in Michael’s charming house in Norwich– the atmosphere is always welcoming and we have fun as well as improving our language skills.

French class is made progressive and enjoyable by learning with plenty of visual aids, topical subjects and a new system of phonetics. Michael’s particular brand of sense of humour equally adds to the ambiance and his patience is unlimited, just what you need in a teacher when your memory is like a sieve! The homework can be quite demanding so be sure to allow time to review the lessons work, listen to the RFI news channel or transcribe a passage from Paris Match for example.

“I have been attending French Classes  for over four years now and have to say it is the highlight of my week.  Not only is he the best teacher that I have ever known but his exuberant personality make the sessions fun, fully of energy and progressive.  I know more about French grammar now than I have ever known and therefore have a much clearer understanding of my reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.  Thank you!”

It is important that our tutor uses different teaching methodologies, such as group/pair working, but equally it is just as important that he has patience, empathy and the ability to motivate me.

I have been learning French for about 7 years. I joined his class  as a student building on a year studying as someone very close to being a beginner. Michael provides challenge and support incorporating grammar into sessions according to the need of the students as well as reading, writing, speaking and listening. I find that he uses technology very effectively and he fully incorporates use of the internet and all media into sessions as well as into his advice and suggestions to students. Now at advanced level I enjoy the topical nature of the contemporary texts we get to read and the tracks we listen to.

If you want to learn French then the place do it is Norwich! Michael’s classes are the best I’ve been to – lessons are well planned and interesting, and even when it feels difficult the learning experience is always enjoyable. Le meilleur endroit pour apprendre une langue étrangère!

I have been taking lessons for just under a year. Michael is an excellent teacher who tailors the lesson specifically for me and uses a wide variety of teaching aids in a relaxing environment. My French has improved greatly since starting especially my pronunciation and grammar and I would thoroughly recommend taking lessons with Michael.

I have been attending Michael's French classes for several years now. I am a carer for my disabled daughter and it is nice to pursue an interest outside the home. I have an A Level in French but that was a long time ago, so I very much needed to brush up on my skills. I look forward to the lessons every week. Michael is a very patient tutor who is good at explaining things. We receive lots of encouragement and converse in French throughout the lesson. My confidence has grown and the subject matter which we read and discuss is always very interesting and contemporary. I would recommend these classes to everyone, whether for pleasure, or improvement or both.

I have been learning French for over 4 years now. Michael is an excellent tutor and although we work hard in class it is always a good experience. He makes the lesson interesting and the atmosphere in class is relaxed and definitely non-threatening. Homework is set each week and we go over the last weeks work before starting a new lesson so we are constantly revising what we have learned. Michael is also very knowledgeable about French films and French customs and gives us critiques on some of the films he has watched and which we may enjoy. The class each week comprises of written, speaking  and listening exercises which we do in groups ,pairs or individually and usually we have a lot of fun.

I have been taking French lessons for something over six months.  His teaching has met my needs perfectly.  He took the time at the beginning to assess my level – decent comprehension, poor pronunciation and very patchy grammar, and has tailored his approach accordingly. His energetic and encouraging teaching style, focus on everyday spoken and written French, use of phonetics to aid pronunciation and topical news articles to frame the teaching have worked very well for me.  Although I still have some way to go I feel my spoken French has come on substantially.  An added bonus is the delightfully quirky location in Elm Hill!

Informal learning environment with small friendly classes. Clear explanations about grammar and varied subjectsfor lessons. Very informative about French culture and French films. Lis B1

I started lessons  about 6 months ago, after some disappointing (aka rubbish) attempts at language learning. Michael's lessons are fast, fun and effective. Whisper it quietly but I am learning to speak French. As in the ability to communicate with French speaking people. Quite shocked!

I have been attending one-to-one lessons weekly for fourteen months and look forward to each class. Michael is an astute teacher and quickly assessed my level of linguistic competence and areas of interest. The classes do not major heavily on formal grammar teaching, which is my preference ,but rather on listening ,viewing and reading a variety of materials. The videos and printed notes are sourced from RFI and YouTube and are always interesting covering areas of French culture and history.I particularly enjoy the 'Word of the week' articles Michael discusses with me each week.I would say that Michael is quite a rigorous teacher, checking what has been absorbed and understood and testing verbally on vocabulary learned.Equally, he is impressively thorough in his preparing for each lesson and material is reinforced through homework set for me.  I consider Michael to be a very organised and reliable teacher who responds quickly by email to any queries. To sum up, great lessons with absolutely no chance to be bored!

Michael is a wonderful French teacher. His lessons are always a delight, not only because of his outstanding knowledge of French and the techniques of teaching French, but also because of his enthusiasm and engaging personality which energize the material and bring it to life. I have been really impressed by the way Michael targets his lessons, thinking carefully about the needs of each student to achieve meaningful progress in pronunciation, listening comprehension, grammar, confidence, and fluency.

Michael is a fantastic language teacher. Under his patient instruction I’ve learned more in a few months than in many years of French classes. His well-chosen materials not only help me to learn new vocabulary and improve my grammar, but they also teach me about French history, current events, and literature. I look forward to lessons!
